The air is fresh… PSLs are plentiful… the leaves are getting crispy… Oh wait, I live in Arizona where it’s still hot and desert, but that doesn’t stop me, drinking PSLs all week long! In the spirit of fall, I finally managed to get my fall decorations out of the garage (but not before checking every box with a black light to make sure there weren’t any scorpions hanging around. Blegh!). I strapped Griffin to my back and did the job. And boy, am I glad I did!

A new way of thinking about fall decorating
When we moved into our house and I started this blog, I felt like I just didn’t have enough decor to decorate all 2300 square feet. My house felt empty! So every fall and Christmas season I added seasonal decorations to what I already had (for example, the first time I decorated for fall here and honestly it looks kind of tacky????). However, over the past few years, I’ve built up a small arsenal of seasonal decor that can stand alone with just a few pieces of my existing decor.
This year instead of trying to decorate everywhere,I picked a few rooms to decorate and focused them on my dining area. I took down all the decorations so I could start from scratch. Preferably. Decision. Always. Working from a clean slate made decorating much easier. This allowed me to create a more cohesive look instead of throwing more decor on top of what was already there. I chose my kitchen table and a few side tables nearby.
Decorating Tip: Clear the surface completely before you start decorating.
How to create an autumnal tablescape
I was inspired this autumnal tablescape by Cherished Bliss. I liked the idea of using a small blanket on the table and only now realized that she also uses white place settings and wooden plates, ha! Anyway, here are four things I kept in mind that helped me create this beauty:
- DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. The wooden rounds helped me highlight the pumpkin and glass vase. By using different heights across the table it gives the eye a trail to follow.
- MATERIAL. This will make your fall tablescape feel warm and cozy. I’m seriously obsessed with using a blanket scarf. They are much cheaper than a throw blanket and are just the right size!
- GREEN. Keeps it feeling fresh even if it’s artificial.
- WHITE ACCENTS. With the wooden table and checkered blanket as a background, cotton, lantern, pumpkins and dishes brighten the tablescape.
Last month I decided to get rid of ALL my dishes and switch to simple, white Corelle…and I’m SO glad I did! Although it has a “cheap” connotation, it remains beautiful and looks pretty! Plus, if I accidentally break a part, it’s easy to replace and I can use it for every vacation.
Small fall tablescapes
I also created two other small tablescapes in our dining room. By focusing my fall decorating on a single room, it’s easier to create some serious fall vibes. And make it look pretty… and cohesive… and crisp. ????
I followed the same 4 rules here: heights, fabric, green, white!
How cute are these stacked fall signs?! I made them last year and wrote a simple tutorial on how to make them with 2x4s.
That’s it! That’s EVERYTHING!
It felt kind of strange only I decorated 3 places but it TOTALLY worked! Decorating a few places with a lot of fall decorations looks much better than decorating ten places with just a few fall decorations. It feels simpler and more minimalistic!
