So I have a strange confession: I have a soft spot in my heart for Wal-Mart. Growing up in a town of 7,000, Wal-Mart was our only department store. The nearest real mall was 1.5 hours away, and it was usually more convenient to shop for groceries at Wal-Mart than at any of the other grocery stores in town. For the first 18 years of my life, I went to the same Wal-Mart almost every week. I have many fond memories of grocery shopping with my mom and walking there with friends – yes, that’s what you do for fun when you’re 16, living in a city of 7,000 people and it’s -20 degrees outside.
Now that I live in Arizona and there are a million other places to shop besides Wal-Mart, I still prefer going to Wal-Mart for everyday essentials. It feels so familiar and I Do I feel like I’m getting the best prices. So earlier this week I decided to browse the craft section (which, I have to admit, is usually pretty crappy). I was pleasantly surprised by the https://decorationg.com/10-clever-kitchen-storage-solutions-to-maximize-your-space/” title=”Clever Kitchen Storage Solutions to Maximize Your Space”>supplies and was inspired to make a fall inspired door hanging! Step 1: Cut the foliage apart and glue it to the board
There were lots of foliage at Wal-Mart, and most of them were only $3 a bouquet! I chose one with a lot of variety – this one had a pumpkin, pine cones, cattails, leaves, grasses, etc. It gave me different options when I arranged them on the board.
I cut two of the larger stems and glued them to the back of the board so they filled the sides.
Then I chose a few different types of foliage for the top and glued those to the back as well. Make sure to leave room for the hanger! To give the image more depth, I chose a few pretty leaves to glue to the bottom front.
I could see the blob of hot glue under the pinecone, so I made a little twine loop to cover it up! PS – Here’s a super quick video how to tie the perfect bow.
Step 2: Glue the letters
I was so excited to find the rustic white wooden letters at Wal-Mart for only 98 cents each! A serious bargain. First I glued them all together (on the back!) with small pieces of twine to keep them spaced apart.
Next, I cut longer pieces of string and glued them to the board from the top of each letter. I made sure to hang each letter at approximately the same height so that “HOME” would hang straight. I left about an inch between the top of the letter and the bottom of the board.
Be sure to allow the glue to dry thoroughly before holding up the door hanging – at least 10 minutes!
Step 3: Label the board
Okay, real talk: That’s me not The best hand lettering is here, so here are my tips. First, I found a font I liked for The Risslers. I already have a lot of downloaded fonts on my computer, but you can access them www.dafont.comBrowse the fonts until you find one you like, then type your text into the “Preview” and get inspired.
Before you start writing, wipe your board with a damp paper towel to remove the stains! You can also tidy up the edges a little later.
Next, I freehand all the letters as best I can, paying attention to the top and bottom of each letter so they are the right size. Then I start drawing over it, making some lines thicker to match the font I chose and smoothing out any bumps from my first attempt. My cousin also just taught me that the upward strokes should be thin and the downward strokes should be thicker. So this is what it looks like:
It’s definitely not perfect, but from a few feet away I’d say it’s passable! 🙂
Step 4: Hang it and enjoy your artwork!
I used a Command Strip hook to hang it on the front door, but you can also use a wreath hanger or nail if you’d like!
